About the forum theater project :
Following the success of our show "De la plume à la scène", we launched our Forum Theatre project thanks to funding from Canadian Heritage, via the Community Cultural Action Fund (CCAF).
What is forum theater?
A variation on "traditional" theater, this type of social and therapeutic theater breaks down the boundaries between stage and audience, enabling everyone to play an active role in social change. Created by Augusto Boal, this type of theater is designed to provoke reflection and provide solutions to social problems.
Forum theater proposes concrete solutions to the problems of social inequality by inviting the audience to take the stage. This change of point of view, which encourages immersion and introspection, enables a better understanding of these issues.
In concrete terms, a playlet is first performed to familiarize the audience with the theme. The play is then replayed, with a member of the audience replacing the victim to propose a different attitude.
With numerous workshops and artistic activities in parallel with the preparation of the play, we have chosen to equip ourselves with a solid cultural program. This is not an insignificant choice for our organization, stemming from a solid conviction that the arts - and particularly the performing arts - help foster social ties, self-expression and, consequently, well-being. Values that drive us forward every day.
This project will focus on the following themes: homelessness, addiction, mental health, access to care, violence against women and/or people from minorities (First Nations, racialized or 2sLGBTQ+).
The first phase of the project aimed to collect testimonials from the general public between September and December. These testimonials were transformed into sketches, which were then staged from January to September 2022. The 3 planned performances will take place in Greater Vancouver in September 2023.
In parallel with the show's staging, we're also offering a host of related workshops: improvisation, artistic writing, interpretation... Calling all our members, partners and volunteers: there's something for everyone!
